Three poised to place at state showcase

Staff reports

Things are getting thick at the state wrestling tournament.

With two days in the book — three tension-filled sessions done and gone — the drama is really starting to pick up.

Three local grapplers are still alive, all looking to get as high on the podium as possible. Olentangy sophomore Trevor Fiorucci has worked his way to the top two in the Division II 103-pound weight class. He beat Crestwood’s Paige Nemec 8-0 in Thursday’s championship prelims, took care of New Richmond’s Austin Skaggs via a quick pin at the 1:06 mark of Friday’s quarterfinal and edged Streetsboro’s Cory Stainbrook 7-4 in the semifinal later in the day.

With the win, Fiorucci will take on St. Paris Graham’s Ryan Taylor, a sophomore who entered the state showcase with a 38-4 record, in today’s championship match.

No other county contender has as much on the line, but there is still a lot to be sorted out for Orange’s Artem Timchenko and Olentangy’s Joe Grandominico (145).

Timchenko, competing in Division I, won his opening match in impressive fashion. He lost Friday’s championship quarterfinal, though, falling to Lakewood St. Edward’s Edgar Bright by a 6-2 margin. Down but not out, the freshman picked himself up off the mat and won a consolation battle with Barberton’s Cobey Fehr 5-3, earning him a spot in today’s seventh-place match. He’ll take on Medina junior Mike Griffin.

Which brings us to Grandominico, the Braves’ senior three-time state qualifier. After sailing past an opponent from Parma Heights Holy Name in a prelim, Grandominico lost a 5-1 decision to St. Paris Graham’s Matt Stephens Friday morning, dropping into the consolation bracket — a place he didn’t want to be, but certainly made the most of.

After the setback, Grandominico picked up back-to-back wins, dropping Toledo Central Catholic’s D.J. Beauch 3-1 before taking care of Akron Archbishop Hoban’s Joe Schindel 10-5 in a consolation quarterfinal. The win sets up a battle with Canal Winchester’s Conrad Rosch in today’s semifinal. The Olentangy senior is two wins away from finishing third in the state — easily his best showing to date.

Even if he loses both of today’s matches, Grandominico will still finish sixth. Not a bad accomplishment by any means.

Olentangy junior Caleb Hetterscheidt (152) and freshman Anthony McHugh (112) were also in action Friday. Neither will be able to place, though, as both lost consolation matches. Hetterscheidt was pinned by Crestwood’s Cody Ryba in 1:34, officially ending what was a solid tournament run. McHugh, meanwhile, lost 10-0 in a championship quarterfinal against Defiance’s B.J. Miller before losing a consolation showdown with Canton South’s Joey Morris 6-3.

As for today’s schedule, Division I, II and III consolation semifinals are set to start at 10 a.m. with third-, fifth- and seventh-place matches to follow at 11.

The Parade of Champions, which Fiorucci will be a part of, is set for 5:30 p.m. while the Division I, II and III title matches should start around 5:45 p.m.
